What are we?

As artificial intelligence systems become more capable and increasingly embedded in everyday life, ensuring they remain aligned with human values and beneficial to society is more important than ever. Maryland AI Safety Initiative is a student-led community at the University of Maryland that brings together students interested in understanding and addressing these challenges.

Our community explores AI safety from both technical and societal perspectives. Through reading groups, discussions, and workshops, we engage with topics such as AI alignment, robustness, interpretability, governance, and the broader social implications of advanced AI systems.

We believe progress in AI safety requires diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary collaboration.
